Our first stop was at spectacular Guinjata Bay, situated south
of Inhambane.
You can fly direct to Inhambane from Johannesburg’s Lanseria
Airport, or alternatively make the 800 KM journey by car.
For comfort factor alone, I’d opt for the flight, but to
really capture the essence of Mozambique, nothing compares to
the war torn sights as you amble through by car.
Guinjata Bay offers you breathtaking deserted beaches and is
rated as one of the best diving resorts in the world! Known in
particular for its abundance of Manta ray, although it became
known to me for its abundance of man-eating jellyfish.
Accommodation packages vary depending on your taste and
budget, but all in all it’s ridiculously affordable, making that
island holiday in Mozambique all the more of a reality.

Guinjata Beach
ROADS
- Severely pot holed
- Safe
- Beach sand roads when you leave the main road
- Best suited to 4x4’s but plenty of normal cars and
bicycles to be seen, ridden by friendly locals who don’t
appear to have much concept of time in general
(How the hell they ride bicycles is beyond me. We tried and
unless you can cycle along the
beach without looking like a complete git, it’s going to be
purely an exercise in staying on)
Don’t forget to hunt down ‘Dino’s Bar’ in
Tofu Beach. It’s a totally chilled out island-style club
experience. Great Pizza! (In fact the only pizza we found) Great
music! Locals dancing in beach wear under starlit African skies.
You’ll pinch yourself for a reality check.
