My Story
So we were crossing the border into the great unknown,
destination Mozambique! We were set for Guinjata Bay – our
first honeymoon stop, and then on to Vilanculos Beach Lodge, a
luxury 5 star resort.
Our journey was accompanied by heavy tropical rain, which due
to lack of drainage soon turned into a deep river. Luckily we
were in the 4x4, but it still felt like something out of ‘Jumanji’!
The roads are heavily pot-holed with very little to no markings.
Frank was laughing, clearly enjoying the adventure, but my
mind was on other things, like the fact that in 10 hours of
driving we were unable to have a toilet break. Mozambique has a
lack of running water in most of the non-tourist areas.
I remembered the words of a friend as we left. ‘Whatever
you’re expecting, tone it down a notch’, she’d said. Mental note
to tone her down a notch for being so damn understated about it.
This was a far cry from Hotels and white fluffy towels, yet even
so, Mozambique was turning into an African adventure certain to
make any honeymoon unforgettable. Eventually the rain subsided
and what I could see of the locals charmed me instantly.
African’s making objects out of wood in their villages, Goats
bleating through our windows as we trundled along the beach sand
roads. Dark African children with bright white smiles, waving
excitedly at new faces entering their terrain. Thankfully my
concern about my choice of Island honeymoon destination turned
to relief as we entered the tourist spots. Only one road away
from what seemed like deepest Soweto, but this was already more
like it! The Kruger
National Park is now being opened up to include Mozambique.
Already the fences have been removed in certain sections and 2
border crossings are in operation between the Kruger National
Park and Mozambique ... one at Pafuri in the North and the other
opposite the Phalaborwa gate on the eastern boundary of course.
Introduction to Mozambique
Mozambique lies on the East coast of southern Africa and on
the western shores of the warm Indian Ocean. The capital of
Mozambique is Maputo which lies in the south. A number of
popular islands famed for game fishing such as Inhaca island
which is just a short flight from Maputo. Further to the north
are Tofo and Barra islands which are excellent locations for
diving holidays. The Bazaruto and Benguerra islands lie off the
coast from Vilanculos. Going towards the far north is the
Quirimbas Archipelago with islands such as Quilalea, Ibo, Matemo
and Vamizi not far off the mainland from Pemba.
Mozambique is a the place to enjoy a honeymoon, diving holiday,
spectacular game fishing holidays, or a simple family holiday.
This si the way to escape from the today's hustle and bustle
world. Attractions also include snorkelling and a dhow cruise at
sunset. It's possible to swim with Dolphins, and to get close up
views of Manta Rays. Mozambique can offer you all this and much
more.
By the way it's now possible to drive to Mozambique via the
Kruger Naional Park at the Gyriondo gate.
Most travel agents can offer Mozambique travel services
including accommodation in Mozambique, flights, car hire, diving
or a complete Mozambique holiday.
